Review: First Comes Love

Hardcover, 198 pages
Published May 8th 2012 by Houghton Mifflin Books for Children
ISBN: 054759979X (ISBN13: 9780547599793)
edition language: English
original title: First Comes Love

Summary:

Like his name, Gray is dark and stormy. Dylan, a girl always searching for what's next, seemingly unable to settle down, is the exact opposite: full of light and life. On the outside, they seem like an unlikely couple. But looks can be deceiving and besides, opposites attract.

What starts as friendship, turns into admiration, respect and caring, until finally these two lone souls find they are truly in love with each other.

But staying in love is not as easy as falling in love. If Dylan and Gray want their love to last, they're going to have to work at it. And learn that sometimes love means having to say you're sorry.

“I don’t know much, but this is what I’ve learned. You’ll fall for the last person you ever thought you’d be interested in. That’s the tricky part. You might not even notice her at first. And she usually comes around just when you’ve stopped looking. But if you pay attention, you’ll know it’s her because she’ll stand out from everybody else. She might even scare you. But if you’re lucky enough to meet this girl, be smart enough to realize it and try not to screw it up.”

I'll start out with I LOVE how Katie writes. It's so different and so real. The characters thought and actions aren't predictable or in the norm. You could immerse yourself in this book- get lost in it. And I did. I finished it in 2 hours. Did I love it? Hell yes.
It was falling in love at it's finest. A true contemporary romance. So juicy with heated kisses and stolen glances. It was falling with out drowning. In falling in love, the characters found themselves. That's whats supposed to happen, right? You're supposed to find the part of yourself that you had been missing for so long. Its a homecoming.
The ending was one I though was going to be bitter, but it was oh so sweet. It's a 'I can't live without you love. '
Dylan needs to move. She can't stay in one place for too long-to leave or to stay? That is the question.
I just love love.
“Look around you. The earth wouldn't exist without the sun. Plants would die without rain. We're all meant to lean on something. Or someone.”
This book was really short in comparison to most of the other books I've read, but it wasn't rushed it all. It felt like real life. Perfection.
And the cover??? Uhmmm, major cover lust.
And, what else is amazing? I got the second book FREE on my Kindle like a month ago!!!!
*victory dance*

Review: Dream Chaser

ebook
Published November 14th 2011 by Angie Stanton
ISBN13: 2940014642071
edition language: English
Summary
Willow Thomas has a bad habit of running away from things that scare
her. And most recently, she quit her high school cheerleading squad
after a terrifying fall. With time on her hands, she auditions for a
musical production directed by a Broadway choreographer. Just as
things are looking up, Willow discovers she will be performing
opposite Eli McAvoy, the best friend she abandoned three years
before. To make matters worse, the kids in the musical hate her, her
singing sucks, and her dog is sick. Eli has grown up during their
years apart and now possesses confidence and good looks, as well as a
giant chip on his shoulder. He is in no hurry to play nice with
Willow, but their entwined roles in the musical lead to entwined
bodies in the backseat of his car. Just when Willow finally has her
life under control, another surprise is delivered in the form of her
greatest challenge yet. Will she run or finally stand and face her
fears? And will Eli be there to help or turn his back on her for
good?

*Author Provided a free copy in exchange for an honest review*

How. Friggin. Adorable.

This is hands down one of my new favorite contemporaries!

“One never forgets their true calling, no matter how far they run”

After a terrifying fall, one girl does all she knows how to do. Run. Run away from her fear, her disaster, and immerse herself in something new. Which just happens to be dancing, something that she ran from years ago when her friend decided he wanted to be more than friends and shocked her.
I love how this book was written. The flow was incredible and the emotions!! GAH!!! I loved this soooo much. And hello! Perfect book boyfriend :3

“Jealousy is such a useless emotion.”

Been needing one of those of late.
The chemistry! The director! The (horrible) best friend whom I have no idea she is still trying to be friends with her! The conquering of the fear of heights! The lights!
Did I mention I'm in love with this book
(me to book) Marry me? (The book said yes....so did Eli)
YAY!!!
I don't really know how to describe it (in case you can't tell) It was just a strange kinda of messed up perfection. It was about mending and finding who you are and becoming you. It was about learning to love and learning to trust. Dream Chaser made you want to dance.

Review: Heartbeat by Faith Sullivan

Paperback, 165 pages
Published February 5th 2013
ISBN: 1482016834 (ISBN13: 9781482016833)
edition language: English

*Author provided in exchange for an honest review.*

Summary

Katie and Adam are afraid of love.

She carries the scars of a first kiss gone terribly wrong.

He uproots his life to flee the stinging betrayal of an ex.

When trust is no longer an option, all romance is suspect.

As a young paramedic, Adam rescues people for a living but cannot save himself. Katie, just out of high school, struggles with a tortured home life she cannot escape.

Everything changes when Katie hops into the front seat of Adam's ambulance. Overwhelmed by what they are feeling, neither possess the confidence to make the first move. They walk away from each other, full of regret.

To find her, Adam risks his future. To be with him, Katie sacrifices her security.

Little do they know, what little time they do have, is being measured by a heartbeat that is slowly dying out.

 The. Ending.
I don't know how to review this without giving away the ending so I'm going to pretend the ending didn't happen.
In a car accident Katie's grandmother gets hurt. She meets Adam, a young paramedic still in med school. In Adam she finds a safe house, a rock to hold on to. After the accident they part, thinking they'll never see each other again.
But, fate brings them together. Fate. Ahh, what a lovely concept.
They then do what any to young people who are attracted to each other, see each other and have the prospect of dating. They fall in love. What Adam doesn't anticipate is her father. Her abusive ninny of a father. She has to escape.
I have mixed feeling for this entire book. Adam and Katie see each other for two seconds (okay maybe 5 minuets) and are suddenly head over heels in love with each other and can't imagine life ever being the same. They have to go through almost trial like scenarios to be with each other...near death experiences and among them.
But is it enough to be together?
THE ENDING. OHMIGOSH. SO WAS NOT EXPECTING THAT

"The ending of HEARTBEAT is controversial." Yup, Ms. Sullivan. No kidding

"The last chapter is full of shock value. It is a sudden shift that may catch you off guard.

I feel HEARTBEAT should come with a warning label on the cover - "Get ready to have your heart ripped out by the final page."
No kidding. I had to re read the ending like 4 times to figure out what happened and I'm still no really sure.

Author Interview: The Book Of Luke

Author Jenny O'Connell was kind enough to grant me a copy of The Book of Luke. It was even signed! When I asked her for an interview, she kindly said yes (that's english for yes).
Below are her answers to my probing question.

-What was the hardest part about writing TBOL? For me the hardest part of writing any book is the middle. I always know how it starts (I LOVE beginnings) and how it ends but rarely know what happens in the middle. In this case I just let Emily and Luke do whatever felt like would be natural given their situation.
-What/Who was your inspiration for your main character and their relationship with each other? (In TBOL) There really wasn’t an inspiration, other than writing a girl that had been raised to do everything “right” and finally decides she keeps getting screwed so nice isn’t the way to go anymore. While there was no real inspiration for the exact characters, Emily’s high school is eerily similar to my own – it’s what I pictured when writing about everything from the hallways to the place they all go for lunch.
- Do you have a favorite place to write? I always write at a bookstore with wifi, best place ever to be inspired, be able to look things up on the Internet if I have questions and have a bite to eat in the process.
-What advice you you have for beginner authors? Read and write. I never set out to be a writer but I LOVE to read. Constantly. I actually thought I wanted to be an editor, not a writer. Reading helps me know what I like (or don’t like) in a story and characters and writing and I find it charges me up. As for writing, you just have to sit yourself down and do it. I have ideas and notebooks and send myself emails all the time about new scenes and lines, etc. but when it comes right down to it you have to sit at your laptop and write.
-What do you think is the best cure for writers block? Read. Then the ideas just start coming. I always read with a notebook beside me to jot down ideas.
-How did you come up with the title for TBOL? I totally don’t remember! But, obviously, it’s a historically biblical title (although I’m not religious), it just totally fit the story to me.
-Is there any music that helped you write TBOL?If there’s music on in the bookstore while I write, that’s fine, but music doesn’t play a big part in getting my fingers typing.
-How did you come up with the idea for TBOL?Actually, it started with Emily’s mom. I thought, “what if a girl was raised by someone who knew how to do everything right?” I figured that would be really tough, so Emily’s mom, an etiquette guru, sort of set the stage. Then I thought how fun it would be if the girl who raised to do everything right (and believe that if you do what’s right you’ll always finish first) decided she was ready to do something really, really wrong. And then Luke entered the picture, and Emily’s friends and the whole thing fell into place.

WAITING ON WEDNESDAY is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

Hardcover, 352 pages
Expected publication: February 4th 2014 by Disney Hyperion

SUMMARY

Interplanetary relations have never been more exciting! The first in a funny, romantic YA sci-fi series.

Two years ago, the aliens made contact. Now Cara Sweeney is going to be sharing a bathroom with one of them.

Handpicked to host the first-ever L’eihr exchange student, Cara thinks her future is set. Not only does she get a free ride to her dream college, she’ll have inside information about the mysterious L’eihrs that every journalist would kill for. Cara’s blog following is about to skyrocket.

Still, Cara isn’t sure what to think when she meets Aelyx. Humans and L’eihrs have nearly identical DNA, but cold, infuriatingly brilliant Aelyx couldn’t seem more alien. She’s certain about one thing, though: no human boy is this good-looking.

But when Cara's classmates get swept up by anti-L'eihr paranoia, Midtown High School suddenly isn't safe anymore. Threatening notes appear in Cara's locker, and a police officer has to escort her and Aelyx to class.

Cara finds support in the last person she expected. She realizes that Aelyx isn’t just her only friend; she's fallen hard for him. But Aelyx has been hiding the truth about the purpose of his exchange, and its potentially deadly consequences. Soon Cara will be in for the fight of her life—not just for herself and the boy she loves, but for the future of her planet.

ARC: The Hazards of Skinny Dipping

Expected publication: May 21st 2013
ISBN13: 9781484044179
Summary:
This isn't a deep book about first loves or self-discovery. If you want a book like that, I'd be happy to recommend one, but I don't have that kind of story to tell. Instead my story is about rash decisions. It's the story of when I finally went skinny dipping, and how my life was never the same again. Oh, and it's also the story of my freshman year of college and realizing Mr. Right might have been there all along.

*This ARC was provided for me by the publisher in exchange for an honest review*

Okay, there is a really really good possibility that I was texting my best friend through the ENTIRE book. You would think that's a bad thing, right? Wrong. She can vouch for me, I was totally reading to bash some faces in, make out with a few guys and well...fall in love. With Reed. Hey he's all kinds of amazing. Dylan...how do I put this nicely?? Is a utter and complete idiot with disgusting thoughts who cries a lot and has a strange impression that he's really manly (He's not)

Juliet is an average girl who has a not so average list. One of the things on the list is skinny dipping. Now, this skinny dipping extravaganza in the pool basically changes her entire college experience. All of it. Let's just go with he catches her in the act...did I mention she forgot a towel. Um, oops. SO EMBARRASSING!!!
Now, in college, they're together. And here is where I rant and may in fact give a few minor spoilers. Hey, this book got my my brain juice going. I had to think! *GASP*

Dylan. Let's just go with I really hate him. He's arrogant, possessive, childish and rude. He's trying to control her. Not Juliet's fault you have trust issues, mister. Let's go with a few incidents: The beach, the Kappa party, the cheating-but-not-cheating incident.

Reed. *.* Oh Reed, I love you. Please be mine forever? (He said yes, by the way)
I love him. The whole time that Juliet is dating that jerk face he is quietly, respectfully, undeniably falling in love with her. I would just like to point out that Romeo and Reed start with the same letter. Coincidence? I think not. Reed saves her from total humiliation by his house (TWO HOUSES, AGAIN NOT A COINCIDENCE) and then he gets her a job at the pizza place his uncle owns. He is so protective of Juliet, its freaking adorable. You can tell they're perfect for each other...but then...disaster strikes! No, I will not tell you. Go away. NO DON'T! I HAVEN'T FINISHED YET! DON'T WORRY NO TRAGIC ENDING!!! Bonus Points

So let's generalize. I love this book. The words totally make sense and they flow. This book could have easily been overdone..but it was perfection. It had this Romeo/ Juliet thing going on that I absolutely loved. The way they adored each other was something you had to wait for...but totally worth it. They completed each other in a way no other person would have ever been able to. When you think about college, you think a new life, parties, new experiences, new friends, a new beginning. That's what this was: a new beginning. Juliet was so stuck at first on her ties to home that she couldn't see that, maybe, what she always needed: the stability and comfort and love, was right in front of her. It was in the perfect gift wrapped package of Reed.

Reed was what she needed.

Last of all, this book was all about finding yourself. It's right. This wasn't some sappy summer romance. It was hard core, let's rock this world, one heck of a love.
