There never was a story that was happy through and through.

When writer Arthur Ransome leaves his home in England and moves to Russia to work as a journalist, it is with little idea of the violent revolution about to erupt. Unwittingly, he finds himself at its center, tapped by the British to report back on the Bolsheviks even as he becomes dangerously romantically entangled with revolutionary leader Trotsky’s personal secretary. Both sides seek to use Arthur for their own purposes…and, as he struggles to find autonomy, both sides grow to suspect him of being a double agent. Arthur wants only to elope far from the conflict with his beloved. But when he attempts to extract himself and Evgenia from the complicated politics and politicians that he fears will lead them both to their deaths, the decisions he faces are the most dangerous and difficult of his life.

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo || A Playlist by Yours Truely

Y'all. I finally got my greedy paws on Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo like a week ago, and GAH. Was I ever missing out. Obviously I need Crooked Kingdom faster than you can say Kaz is a dream boat and Nina is a goddess on earth and we just need to bow down.

My darling little murderous petunia. And then, of course there is Inej who is just too good for this world. I think I'm loving the totally raw and completely brutal Grisha universe as much this time around as I did with Shadow and Bone (The Darkling, my babe. I'm still swooning over the make me your villain and until you have no other shelter but me. I know. I have issues.).

Holiday Gift Guide for Foodies

We all have that one friend who watches Master Chef and The Great British Baking Show religiously.  (this friend in my group may be me, tbh) Maybe it’s the fact that they can pair cheese with their countries of origin, or the way that—without fault—they always somehow end up at Whole Foods or some other food selling establishment on every outing. They’re a foodie to the bone. And you wouldn’t have them any other way.

Shopping for these folks isn’t a heard task, but if you are struggling a bit, that’s what I’m here for. I’m here to help you construct the best foodie gift basket ever. And, why YES, I do believe that books are some of the best thing to give. We’re going to throw in a few options for that as well.

Things I've Found Since This Whole College Thing

Gah. I love this picture. I mean really. This is the aesthetic I dream of being my aesthetic. Let's just replace the cappuccino with an americano and BABE WE ARE SET.

Happy Thanksgiving to all my fellow United States Residents! I just love the fact that we choose to write out all the hella nasty things we did to the Natives in favor of recognizing that these folks went out of their way to make sure everyone (Native and New Folks alike) didn't all die a short, painful, hunger and disease induced death. Conquering 'new' land is always such an ethical adventure, isn't it? But, hey! Now we have turkey and mashed potatoes and dressing to eat on this fall-ish day of the year.

Spindle by EK Johnston

ARC via Andye @ Readingteen.net
Published December, 2016

The world is made safe by a woman...but it is a very big world.

It has been generations since the Storyteller Queen drove the demon out of her husband and saved her country from fire and blood. Her family has prospered beyond the borders of their village, and two new kingdoms have sprouted on either side of the mountains where the demons are kept prisoner by bright iron, and by the creatures the Storyteller Queen made to keep them contained.

But the prison is crumbling. Through years of careful manipulation, a demon has regained her power. She has made one kingdom strong and brought the other to its knees, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. When a princess is born, the demon is ready with the final blow: a curse that will cost the princess her very soul, or force her to destroy her own people to save her life.

The threads of magic are tightly spun, binding princess and exiled spinners into a desperate plot to break the curse before the demon can become a queen of men. But the web of power is dangerously tangled--and they may not see the true pattern until it is unspooled.

All of the Yummy Foods Ever {SMP Holiday Blitz}

I don't know about y'all, but when it comes to the holiday season, there are a few foods that I have to have or I sort of consider it an unsuccessful holiday. Food wise, anyways.

For me, I want pecan pralines and Thanksgiving dressing--chicken livers and all. Smells nasty when it's being cooked, but all together *swooooons* It's divine. Also pecan pie. Pretty sure I was put on this earth to just eat all the food. All of the food that I've listed originates from my Granny's kitchen back in East Texas. I'll be frequenting there this break since my family {mom and sister and dad and darling pets} are up in Seattle pursing the next beautiful, bold adventure.

Calling Authors! All These Love Letters Need a YA Book.

I’m not sure if I’ve ever told you, but I’m totally and completely infatuated with love letters. And poetry. And romance. However, all of that lovely stuff being said, I’m also a realist. (I like to think I’m half romantic and half realist) Basically all boundaries are broken with Anais Nin and Henry Miller. These two had an off and on again affair while she was in Paris (1931-1934ish) and THIS IS SORT OF WHERE HER WRITING BECOMES LEGIT TO THE WORLD.

For Vân Uoc, fantasies fall into two categories: nourishing or pointless. Daydreaming about attending her own art opening? Nourishing. Daydreaming about Billy Gardiner, star of the rowing team who doesn't even know she's alive? Pointless.

So Vân Uoc tries to stick to her reality--keeping a low profile as a scholarship student at her prestigious Melbourne private school, managing her mother's PTSD from a traumatic emigration from Vietnam, and admiring Billy from afar. Until she makes a wish that inexplicably--possibly magically--comes true. Billy actually notices her. In fact, he seems to genuinely like her. But as they try to fit each other into their very different lives, Vân Uoc can't help but wonder why Billy has suddenly fallen for her. Is it the magic of first love, or is it magic from a well-timed wish that will eventually, inevitably, come to an end?
